Abstract
To investigate the effect of acetaldehyde on the human chromosomes especially frequency and distribution of sister chromatid exchange, an attempt was made.
The results obtained were as follows :
The frequencies were found to be 17.98 ¡¾ 0.49, 12.97 ¡¾ 0.34, 10.98¡¾0.26 and 7.24 ¡¾ 0.24 in treated with acetaldehyde 10-3, 5 x 10-3, 10-¢¥ M and the control respectively.
Acetaldehyde produced the dose dependent increase of frequency of SCE.
The regions generally vulnerable to acetaldehyde were 1q23 in chromosome 1, 2g31 in chromosome 2 and 3g21 in chromosome 3. Among these regions, 2g31 in chromosome 2 was particularly susceptible to acetaldehyde
Most of these regions susceptible to acetaldehyde were corresponding to G-1 ight bands.
